Carpet seen better days? Rejuvenate it with these carpet cleaning tips

Professional Carpet & Upholstery Cleaners • Feb 26, 2019
Whether your home is full of plush rugs or beach-style jute mats, a beautiful carpet really can be the focal point of any room. The carpet is one of the first things you’ll see as you enter your hallway, living room or bedroom, so it’s important to make sure that it looks spick and span at all times. After all, a dirty or dishevelled carpet can make a room look untidy, even if the rest of the interior design is exceptional.

Keeping your carpets clean, however, can be difficult, especially when they’re constantly underfoot. From guests walking dirt into your home to pets getting their muddy paws everywhere, it’s inevitable that your carpets will suffer from time to time. If your carpet has seen better days, it may be tempting to simply purchase a new one or to cover up the grey patches with pieces of furniture. However, with just a few simple tips and tricks, you can rejuvenate your carpets and keep them looking brand new without having to fork out for a costly replacement.

At Professional Carpet & Upholstery Cleaners, we’re experts in making all carpets look as new as they did when they were first put down. So, whether you’re hoping to transform the rugs and carpets in your home or workplace, follow our top maintenance tips:

Limit dirt and debris

Although not necessarily a cleaning tip, it’s important to take steps to prevent dirt and debris from reaching your carpets in the first place. Over time, dust, soil and other particles from the outside world can really damage your flooring by dulling its appearance and leaving areas of it matted or shiny. To prevent this from happening, make sure you follow these top tips:

Leave shoes at the door

As soon as you step inside your home, swap your shoes for some inside-only slippers. Not only is this much more comfortable, but it’ll stop you from trampling anything from outside into your favourite carpets. This is also much more hygienic; the amount of bacteria on the bottom of your shoes may surprise you, and certainly isn’t something you want invading your living areas.

Invest in a doormat

If you don’t want to ask your guests to remove their shoes, make sure there’s a doormat for them to wipe their feet on as they enter your home. This is especially important if it’s been raining, as you don’t want wet or muddy footprints staining your gorgeous plush rugs.

Dry your dog’s paws

A good tip is to leave a towel hung up next to your front door for the times where your dog gets a bit too muddy on their daily walk. As much as we love our furry friends, nobody wants paw prints all over their favourite rugs. Make sure you give your dog’s paws a quick dry before you let them into the house to remove some of the dirt they’ve picked up on your walk.

Implement a food ban

Has your living room rug become infested with toast crumbs from your children’s after-school snack time? Is the expensive carpet you chose for your bedroom now covered in splatters of morning coffee? Although it’s difficult to avoid food and drink from coming into contact with your carpets altogether, it’s definitely a good idea to implement a food ban to protect your most valuable carpets - especially if they’re fluffy! Crumbs and flakes of food can easily get lodged between the fibres in your carpet, making them difficult to remove entirely.

Hoover regularly

It’s surprising how much cleaner your flooring can look once the top layers of dirt and debris have been removed. Many of us don’t think twice about walking into our homes with our shoes on, but by doing so you’re likely to bring in lots of dust and flecks of mud that can build up over time. This can be especially harmful if your carpets are particularly pale or shaggy, as dirt is much more visible on lighter shades and is more difficult to remove when stuck to thick tufts of fabric.

For this reason, it’s important to make sure you vacuum your carpets regularly. By making it a part of your weekly cleaning routine, you can make sure that your rugs and mats are free from any debris that could eventually stain them. If you’ve had guests around or you’ve treated yourself to dinner on the sofa, make sure to vacuum afterwards to remove any biscuit crumbs, grains of rice or specks of food that could be pushed further and further into your carpet.

When you’re vacuuming, pay attention to the areas of your house that you and your family use the most. This is likely to be your hallway carpets and stairs, which are often neglected when it comes to cleaning and tidying. Make sure to give these high-traffic areas the same treatment as you would your living room and bedroom carpets for great results.

Get rid of stains

To give your carpet new life, you’ll need to tackle any stains that have accumulated over the years. Stains can make your flooring look shabby and unkempt, and unfortunately, they’re guaranteed to build up over time. No matter how much you try to avoid stains from appearing, sometimes it simply cannot be helped. From dropped spoonfuls of soup to knocked over coffee and splashes of red wine to splodges of ketchup, it’s inevitable that you’ll have to tackle stains at some point.

When doing so, there are a few things to consider:

Choose a suitable detergent

First of all, when finding a cleaning product, it’s important to make sure that you find a detergent that won’t cause more damage to your carpet. If you’ve invested in a beautiful rug for years to come, the last thing you want to do is discolour it or ruin its texture by using the wrong cleaning product. It’s advised that you test the product on a patch of carpet that you can’t see (such as a square underneath your sofa or in a cupboard) before you apply it to the stain in question. If it doesn’t leave any noticeable traces behind, you can trust that it’s safe for use.

Dab the stain, don’t rub it

Once you’ve found a suitable cleaning product, it’s a good idea to apply it to a cloth instead of spraying it directly onto the carpet. Doing so could soak the carpet and make the stain even more difficult to budge. Simply dab at the mark until it begins to get lighter, and top up the detergent if necessary. Refrain from rubbing the mark as you may push the liquid or dirt even further into the carpet.

Work from the outside in

When dabbing the stain, take care to work from the outside of the stain towards the centre. This will keep the mess contained rather than making the affected area bigger. Once you’ve removed the mark, allow the patch to dry naturally rather than applying heat. Then, when the area of carpet is completely dry, give it a quick vacuum to remove any dirt that may have settled and clung to the wet patch.

Hire professional carpet and furniture cleaning services

Your home or office deserves the best treatment possible, so consider hiring professional home cleaning services to make sure your carpets and other furnishings are cleaned to the highest of standards. If you’re a dab hand at cleaning, it can be tempting to try to tackle stained and damaged carpets yourself. However, red wine spills and coffee stains can be extremely stubborn, and you may end up causing more damage to your carpets and rugs by persisting with the wrong detergent or scrubbing brush.

For this reason, it’s recommended that you enlist the services of a professional carpet cleaning service. With the right tools and expertise, they’ll have everything they need to clear your flooring of any unpleasant stains or odours while keeping it looking as good as new. Whether you’re hoping to rejuvenate your hallway rugs or your office’s kitchen carpet is looking particularly shabby, it’s always best to rely on the professionals.
